My name is David Connolly and I have been making and teaching Art for over 15 years. It is my great passion and I enjoy doing it, professionally and personally in addition to teaching experience, I have an expansive visual vocabulary in the areas of painting, prints and drawings of various types and time periods (including the medium/ material make-up, traditional and contemporary methods). I have an academic and self-taught background in painting, drawing, foundations and computer graphics for over ten years, (and am an artist working in the areas of drawing, painting and print).

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I believe that students are largely brilliant—it is just that some of them do not really have any idea as to how brilliant, and what kinds of capabilities lay deeply within them or just beneath the surface. It’s my job to help them to see their own brilliance, or distance they must travel to find it, and then give them the tools to go and get it. This compels me to hold students to a very high standard, and thus I push them to strive for academic excellence in all their projects, writing samples, class participation, group and discussion interaction, critique, personal management, and ambitious goal setting. Along the same line as having high standards for them, I believe that students must learn to grow in maturity and their abilities to pursue excellence of character and personal integrity, both in the areas of academics and life beyond the classroom, as they are expected to learn to contribute to the world they live in at some level, with a spirit of excellence, reliability and commitment.

I am largely Socratic and use cooperative learning models, and believe in using a context, working from a foundational, pivotal point building a scaffold of knowledge for the students to later fill in the details through research, failure and practice. Failure I have discovered is a friend to the learner who fails under appropriate circumstances. When the learner fails in the presence of love, admiration, acceptance and respect, that learner maintains focus, is able to get back up and aggressively try again with dignity intact. This learner who fails in an interactive, non-condemning environment has found success time after time, learning how to embrace personal values and communal values, and contribute as a respectful and respectable member of the group. Since I place great confidence in failure as a teacher, I work to co-labor alongside the student with patience, giving them room to fail and succeed.

The brain seems to be a fantastic sorting machine or puzzle solver, that wants to make pieces fit, and is daring to try pieces that do not seem to fit just to make puzzling things make sense. I want my students to be willing to dig anywhere and challenge any premise to find what works, or expert knowledge or the best practice (etc.), and so they must be willing to build, tear down, fail and be beaten by the process of learning and practicing, all to make the pieces fit.
